Just the mere mention of vitamin A conjures up visions of eye health and carrots. But, from now on, you’re going to think of herpes as well. In fact, a study showed that if you have a vitamin A deficiency, you’re at “significant risk” to contracting HSV-2. This study didn’t establish vitamin A’s role in preventing herpes infection, but one thing is clear.
Vitamin A can reduce the severity of corneal HSV infections and lessen the effects of Herpes Stromal Keratitis (HSK) disease or prevent from developing it at all. So, eat up on those carrots, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes. You could also just pop 900-1300 mcg of a vitamin A supplement for herpes everyday.
Adenosine Monophosphate (AMP) isn’t a vitamin, however, it’s a chemical that’s present in every human body. When it combines with phosphate, it can be used as an alternative medicine. The controversy over the use of AMP is a serious one. There are many side effects if it’s not used correctly. However, it has the potential to prevent outbreak recurrences and significantly speed up recovery.
It’s typically taken as an intramuscular injection but is only performed by a doctor. You might also see that it can be taken orally for herpes zoster (shingles), which is another infection that manifests on the skin. It’s been seen as an effective treatment for HSV since 1936. According to many studies, the ascorbic acid in vitamin c prevents the virus from activating and/or recurring so often after infection, supports the immune system, and accelerates the lesion healing process.
Small doses of vitamin C can make a big difference, but massive doses administered through the vein or the muscles can really boost its antiviral properties.
However, intravenous and intramuscular injections aren’t as readily available as oral supplements. Consider taking up to 10,000 mg a day for very acute outbreaks. Otherwise, 500-3,000 mg daily is suitable for daily doses.
You should also consider beefing up your diet with vitamin C0-rich foods like citrus fruits, green, leafy veges, broccoli, cauliflower, and bell peppers.

Because chlorophyll has the ability to inhibit the virus from penetrating the host cell, it can stop a cold sore from developing in its tracks, and to help those genital lesions dissipate quickly and without pain if they ever come on at all.

Like vitamin D, it also rallies T cells together for ultimate defense against infections. To prove this point, a study found that a vitamin E supplement for herpes can really change the game to have your interests on the winning side.
It can help to prevent HSV-1 from causing HSV Encephalitis (HSE). HSE affects your central nervous system and interferes with brain health.
Topical ointments containing vitamin E can also provide pain relief within 15 minutes of application, especially if you’re repeating applications at least four times daily. Vitamin E-rich foods include green, leafy veges, vegetable oils, and wheat germ.

Zinc is a metal, but it has so many uses in medicine that it couldn’t be forgotten here. In fact, it’s what you would consider an essential trace element because your body does need it, even if it’s only in very small amounts. But, those very small amounts can go a long way when it comes to HSV.
Used topically, zinc sulfate is the most common antiviral form of zinc used. Studies showed that it can possibly prevent a flareup from both spontaneous and sunlight-induced circumstances.
Other studies concluded that it speeds up healing time. You don’t need a lot of it either. Concentrations kept low and between 0.025-0.25 percent are still strong enough to provide satisfactory results while keeping the side effects away.
Apart from taking zinc supplements to make up for a vegetarian diet or for other reasons, you could also start taking it for your herpes.
There have been several studies that have showed positive results in minimizing the frequency of outbreaks, reducing the severity of the symptoms, and strengthening the body’s defenses when exposed to triggers.
