What is Lysine?
L-Lysine, also known as “Lysine”, has been around for over a century when it was first discovered in 1889 by a German Scientist. Later on in 1928, it was later synthesized.
While it did become popular in the ’50s under the name Lysine Hydrochloride, it hasn’t been until the last decade that Lysine sales continue to increase between 7-10 percent each year.
Lysine is an essential amino acid. No animal and human body can produce it on its own. To get this nutrient, you must ingest it through lysine-rich foods and/or supplements.
It’s absolutely vital for “growth and tissue repair”, and its potential benefits affects everything from inhibiting the HSV virus to alleviating the effects of anxiety to improving athletic performance.
How Does Lysine Treat Herpes?
One of the most notorious amino acids that actually aids the proliferation of herpes is arginine. While it’s beneficial for many metabolic, circulatory, and muscle-growth needs, the herpes virus depends on arginine for replication. So, where does Lysine come in?
Most of us know that when the virus penetrates a cell and becomes active, it’s ready for replication with symptoms manifest on the surface of the skin. This results in an outbreak. While cures are hard to come by, Lysine can help to stop the viral replication process that leads to a flareup.
It’s been well-studied that both lysine and arginine compete for absorption into the body’s cells. Since they share the same transport systems, a diet rich in Lysine versus arginine can help to inhibit HSV. Lysine also blocks Arginine from being of use in the body.
In the reverse, a high amino acid ratio of Arginine to Lysine can be shown to inhibit Lysine function in the body.
The bottom line is, both amino acids are important in the body for many reasons than we have time to share. But, when suffering with a flareup or trying to prevent a breakout, keeping your Lysine intake higher versus an arginine intake can help to keep the itch and blisters at bay.
To prove Lysine’s benefits when it comes to practical use and treatment of herpes, a study showed that it decreased the number of breakouts, reduced severity, and sped up healing time.
Another study with herpes simplex labialis (cold sores) showed that the more Lysine you get, the less likely you’ll experience an outbreak and the lesions will be fewer and less severe.
Despite the positive evidence, there are still mixed feelings about using Lysine and other natural remedies for herpes. Such studies are unwilling to explore such an affordable and risk-free treatment versus medicated options like aciclovir.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) develop in high concentrations and large numbers in diabetics leading to infections and other diabetic-related conditions. Lysine is showing to be helpful in inhibiting glycation pathways to prevent the accumulation of AGEs.
Anti-Acute Pancreatitis Treatment
Although there’s yet more studies to confirm Lysine’s role in acute pancreatitis, it does have a positive effect to suppress inflammation in the digestive system. Lysine reduces the negative effects caused to pancreatic tissue by arginine. It does this by preventing inflammation from occurring and by enhancing antioxidant activity.
Types of Lysine
When treating herpes with Lysine, the main method is ingestion. You can consume it with Lysine-rich foods or you can purchase supplements.
A fun and healthy way to increase your Lysine intake without much effort would be to include it in your diet with foods.

Supplementation with free-form Lysine can help to suppress the metabolism of arginine to keep herpes flareups under control and reduce the severity of symptoms. Lysine is often sold in either capsule or pill form. Size options typically range anywhere from 60 pills/capsules to 100 and even more. They’re often sold in 500 mg or 1000 mg strengths.
Most of these ointments, creams, chap-sticks, and balms are designed to relive the painful and itchy symptoms of a breakout. They can be blended with Lysine, vitamins, herbal extracts, butters, and medicated chemicals to provide relief.
Getting Lysine intravenously isn’t yet a medical option for treating herpes. While it is being used in studies, it’s not yet known to be available in this method.
How to Use Lysine for Herpes
While incorporating Lysine-rich foods into your diet can be effective, it can also pose health problems for those with specific conditions that are sensitive to large amounts of protein-rich foods. The easiest way is to use Lysine in its free form.
Lysine supplements for herpes are also very effective when they’re taken right before activities that serve as triggers for flareups.
Outside of taking it to control flareups, symptoms, and maintenance between remission, you should also take it before drinking alcohol, sun exposure, binge eating, and stressful situations.
What makes Lysine dosage for herpes so difficult to determine is that you’ll get conflicting information from everyone and everywhere.
While the WHO has set the recommended daily requirements at 12 mg/kg-1 once a day, studies show that males need three times that amount. It does bring into question exactly how much you’ll need when treating herpes.
As a general guideline, we’ll use the scientifically-researched doses.
For cold sore supplementation, you should take 1,000 mg three times daily for six months. Continue taking 1,000 mg once daily for 12 months.
For topical application during outbreaks, you should be applying your choice of creams, chap-sticks, and the like every two hours for 11 days. You should also be taking Lysine supplements for herpes three times daily in 1,000 mg strengths for for six months.
For genital herpes, you should be taking approximately three pills/capsules in 1,000 mg strengths once daily. If you feel an outbreak will occur in times of stress or the likelihood of activated triggers, you should take 4-6 pills/capsules in 1,000 mg strengths daily. This latter dosage is also appropriate for during an outbreak.
Lysine Side Effects
Lysine is extremely safe to use for supplementation and topical application for most people. Little to no side effects are likely to occur.
You can experience stomach pain and diarrhea if you take Lysine incorrectly. However, there are a few precautions to be aware of if you have any of the following:
There isn’t yet enough research with Lysine and pregnant/nursing women to yet establish if it is safe to take. Play it safe and discuss with your doctor before taking it.
While both Lysine and calcium are beneficial for bone and cartilage growth, the combination of both supplements can increase calcium absorption. Always discuss with your physician if you should be taking Lysine supplements.
If you have an intolerance to lysinuric protein, Lysine supplementation can cause allergic reactions such as stomach pain and diarrhea.
