Oregano Oil & Herpes

What is Oregano Oil?

While most of you most likely associate oregano with aromatic and culinary uses, there’s a lot more to it than what meets the nose and taste buds. Oil is typically extracted from the leaves and flowers of the oregano herb via a steam distillation method.

The constituents that make up the plant-based oil is in itself a natural antibiotic. Despite the fact that it wasn’t until after World War II that oregano found popularity in the U.S., it has been an herb used for its oil in traditional medicine for eons.

Oregano oil contains many active compounds. Its primary active compound is carvacrol. This is what provides its antiviral properties to fight viral infections. Furthermore, it also contains origanum heracleoticum L. which fights against bacteria strains, especially those that have become antibiotic-resistant.

Funnily enough, we all know that antibiotics are useless against viruses as they’re only useful against bacteria-induced infections.

This is because virus pathogens hide within the body’s cells out of reach of the immune system to effectively eradicate it from the body and for antibiotics to break it down. So, can oregano oil cure herpes?

The issue with herpes is that the cells have a protective membrane. Herpes virus is capable of binding themselves to the membrane and even penetrating it if your body is deficient in effective proteoglycan synthesis. Conventional antibiotics find it difficult to effectively penetrate the membrane into the DNA core in order to fight the virus in its most vulnerable state.

Oregano oil can effectively break down the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane, and it can also penetrate it to dissolve it, especially when oregano oil is present in the body prior to a breakout. Oregano oil can inhibit the virus at different stages of the infection and its replication.

Once this process has taken place, it delivers its potent antioxidant and antimicrobial properties to aid the immune system in preventing viral replication and transmission to another host.

Also, carvacrol isn’t the only compound used to fight herpes. In fact, when it’s used alone, it can’t address HSV-1. However, the synergistic effect with polyphenols and carvacrol in the oil can effectively treat HSV-1.

This addresses why conventional medications fail herpes sufferers because it only addresses the symptoms and not the underlying cause. According to this study, oregano oil “has advantages over common antiviral drugs.” The best, natural treatments for herpes are anything but conventional – they’re superior.

Types of Oregano Oil

Oregano oil is available in capsule or liquid form. Because it’s a natural substance, you always want to ensure you have the highest quality product possible. Here’s some things to look for when considering the best oregano oil on the market.

Are all oregano oil products equal? No. Despite the many factors that come into play, such as country and time of year picked, whether it’s organic, or the processing methods, there’s also the type of oregano that’s used. There’s Wild Mediterranean Oregano, Mexican Oregano, and Spanish Oregano. While most say that origanum vulgare (Mediteranean Oregano) is the most beneficial, studies are proving that other types are also effective.

Carvacrol Content

It’s easy to get single-minded and thinking carvacrol is all you need. While it’s extremely important, it’s also vital to ensure that as many plant constituents remain intact during the processing methods for synergistic capabilities to fight herpes. With that said, most oregano oils will contain somewhere around 50 to 85 percent of carvacrol. The more potent it is, the more expensive it will be.

The more pure the oil is, the higher quality it will be. This is because it has the highest amount of retained nutrients possible. Because federal regulation on quality of essential oils doesn’t exist in the U.S., you’ll want to look for assurance of quality with the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) label. You’ll also want to avoid any additional fillers and solvents. Instead, look for unprocessed and raw, steam distillation, and undiluted oils.

Capsules are convenient for quick and internal use. They are usually sold in bottles of 30, 60, and 90 capsules. The doses will vary from 25 mg to 600 mg. Most capsules will be made of gelatin, either made from animal or plant sources.

This happens to be the most popular way to use oregano oil. It’s the most versatile method, and it’s how it was used anciently. Many liquid options will often come diluted with a carrier oil for immediate topical use. These oils may be olive, almond, grapeseed, or some other type of MCT oil. It can also come undiluted and pure. This is great for aromatic use and topical use with caution. It’s a hot oil so your skin may experience burning or hot sensations if used inappropriately.
